How to Choose the Right Tires for Your Vehicle in Ontario

Choosing the right tires is about more than finding a set that fits your wheels. Your tires affect braking, handling, comfort, fuel efficiency, and how your vehicle performs in rain, snow, and changing Canadian temperatures.

At Islington Chrysler, our Service Centre helps drivers in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and surrounding neighborhoods within the GTA understand their vehicle's tire requirements, inspect current tires, and determine when it's time for a replacement.

What Type of Tires Do I Need?

The main types of tires include all-season, all-weather, winter, all-terrain, and mud-terrain tires. The right choice depends on your vehicle, driving habits, and the conditions you regularly encounter.

What is the difference between tires available in the market?

  • All-season tires are designed for general driving in moderate conditions. They can be used year-round but are not specifically designed for severe winter conditions.

  • All-weather tires are designed for year-round use while providing greater winter capability than conventional all-season tires. Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, which indicates that a tire meets requirements for severe snow conditions.

  • Winter tires are specifically designed for cold temperatures, snow, and ice. Their rubber compounds remain more flexible in cold weather, while their tread patterns are designed to improve winter traction.

  • All-terrain tires are designed for a combination of highway and off-road driving.

  • Mud-terrain tires are designed for more aggressive off-road and muddy conditions.

When Should I Have My Tires Inspected?

You should have your tires inspected regularly and whenever you notice something unusual.

A tire inspection is especially useful during the following periods:

  • Before winter
  • Before a long road trip
  • When changing between seasonal tires
  • When you notice uneven wear
  • When your vehicle vibrates or pulls
  • When a tire repeatedly loses pressure
  • When you see cracks, bulge, or other damage

Checking your tires at least monthly for proper pressure, tread wear, damage, and foreign objects can also help identify problems before they become more serious.

Which tires are best for Canadian driving?

For Ontario drivers, the best tire depends on how and where you drive. If you regularly encounter snow, ice, and cold temperatures, winter tires can provide additional traction. If you prefer one set of tires for year-round driving, an appropriately rated all-weather tire may be an option.

Do I need winter tires in Ontario?

Ontario does not generally require passenger vehicles to use winter tires by law. However, winter tires are recommended for drivers who regularly encounter winter conditions.

If you choose winter tires, use four matching winter tires rather than mixing winter and non-winter tires.

How do I choose the right tires for my vehicle?

Start by checking your vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire size, load rating, and speed rating. Then consider your typical driving conditions, such as city driving, highway travel, snow, rain, or off-road use.

How Do I Know What Tires My Vehicle Needs?

Your vehicle's recommended tire size and specifications are usually found on the tire information label, commonly located on the driver's door or door frame. Your owner's manual is another useful source.

How do I find my tire size?

You can also find the tire size printed on the sidewall of your existing tire.

For example, a tire marked 235/65R17 104H provides several specifications:

Specification Description
235 Tire width in millimeters
65 Aspect ratio, or sidewall height
R Radial construction
17 Wheel diameter in inches
104 Load index
H Speed rating

Should I replace my tires with the same size?

In most cases, replacement tires should match the manufacturer's recommended size, load capacity, and speed rating. Using the correct specifications helps maintain the vehicle's intended handling and performance.

Can I use a different tire size?

A different tire size may be possible on some vehicles, but it should not be selected simply because the tire fits the wheel. Changing tire size can affect handling, clearance, speedometer readings, and other vehicle systems.

Always verify compatibility before changing from the manufacturer's recommended size.

Does my vehicle require a specific tire type or rating?

Yes. Some vehicles have specific requirements for tire size, load index, speed rating, or construction. Trucks, SUVs, and performance vehicles may have different requirements than passenger cars.

How Do I Know When My Tires Need to Be Replaced?

Tire replacement depends on tread depth, age, damage, and wear patterns rather than mileage alone.

How much tire tread is safe?

Tires should be replaced when the tread reaches the built-in tread-wear indicators, which correspond to approximately 1.5 mm (2/32 inch) of tread depth.

However, tires may provide less traction well before reaching that minimum, particularly in wet or snowy conditions. For winter driving, Transport Canada recommends at least 4 mm of tread depth on winter tires.

How often should tires be replaced?

There is no universal mileage interval for every tire. Tire life depends on driving habits, road conditions, climate, maintenance, and storage.

Regular inspections are more reliable than replacing tires based solely on mileage.

How old is too old for a tire?

Tires can deteriorate with age even when they have plenty of tread. Ontario's MTO Driver's Handbook states that tires should not be older than 10 years.

Check the tire's date code to determine its age, and have older tires inspected even if they appear to be in good condition.

What are the signs that tires need replacing?

Look for the following:

  • Low or uneven tread
  • Cracks in the tread or sidewall
  • Bulges or blisters
  • Cuts or significant damage
  • Exposed cords
  • Excessive vibration
  • Uneven wear
  • Frequent loss of tire pressure

Can tires look good but still need replacement?

Yes. A tire can appear to have sufficient tread while having age-related deterioration, internal damage, or uneven wear.

A professional inspection can identify problems that may not be visible during a quick visual check.

What does uneven tire wear mean?

Uneven wear can indicate incorrect tire pressure, wheel misalignment, tire imbalance, suspension problems, or other mechanical issues.

If your tires are wearing unevenly, replacing them without addressing the underlying problem can cause the new tires to wear prematurely as well.

How important is wet-weather performance?

Wet-weather performance is an important consideration because tire tread design and condition affect how effectively water is displaced and how much traction the tire maintains on wet roads.

What Should I Look for When Buying New Tires?

When choosing new tires, consider tire type, size, rating, weather performance, expected tread life, comfort, and your driving habits.

The most expensive tire is not necessarily the best choice, and the cheapest option may not provide the performance you need.

Does tire brand matter?

Brand can matter because manufacturers use different tread designs, rubber compounds, construction methods, and technologies. However, choosing the correct tire type and specifications for your vehicle is just as important.

Do more expensive tires last longer?

Not necessarily. Tire prices can reflect differences in materials, performance, construction, technology, warranty, and brand.

A more expensive tire may offer advantages that are useful for your driving needs, but price alone does not determine tire life.

What is the total cost to replace all four tires?

When budgeting for tires, remember that the total cost ideally should include:

  • Four tires
  • Mounting and installation
  • Tire balancing
  • Valve stems or related components
  • Wheel alignment, if required
  • Tire disposal fees
  • Applicable taxes

The best way to determine your actual cost is to have your vehicle's tire requirements assessed before selecting a replacement set.

Why do some tires cost significantly more than others?

Different tires use different materials, tread compounds, construction methods, and technologies. Specialized, premium, performance, or larger tires can also cost more because of their design and intended use.

What Else Should I Do When Replacing My Tires?

Installing new tires is also a good opportunity to check related components and correct problems that could affect tire life.

Should I get an alignment when replacing tires?

Yes, its recommended you do.  Also, your alignment should be checked if your old tires show uneven wear, your vehicle pulls to one side, or the steering wheel is not centered.

Should I replace all four tires at once?

When possible, replacing all four tires together provides more consistent tread depth and handling.

If only two tires need replacement, consult a tire professional about the appropriate placement and compatibility with your existing tires.

Do I need tire balancing?

Yes. Wheels should be properly balanced when tires are installed. Balancing helps reduce vibration and promotes more even tire wear.

Should I replace the valve stems?

Valve stems should be inspected whenever tires are replaced and replaced when necessary. This can help prevent air leaks and maintain proper tire pressure.

Should I have my brakes inspected?

Yes.  A tire replacement is a convenient time to have your brakes inspected, especially if your vehicle is due for maintenance or you have noticed squealing, grinding, pulling, or changes in brake-pedal feel.

Should I rotate my new tires?

Yes. Regular tire rotation helps promote more even wear. Follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommended rotation schedule; approximately 10,000 km is a common interval.
